United Nations World Tourism Organization or UNWTO represented by Secretary-General Taleb Rifai visited and reviewed Bohol’s recovery program for tourism. The recovery program is supported by UNWTO, Department of Tourism of the Philippines, US Agency for International Development, and the Pacific Asia Travel Association.
UNWTO is the United Nations specialized agency entrusted with the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Its headquarters are in Madrid, Spain. It provides leadership and support in advancing knowledge and tourism policies. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy and a source of tourism research and knowledge.
The Bohol Tourism Recovery Plan aims to draw and realize the road map for total tourism recovery in Bohol. Despite of the great disasters that hit the Philippines, the country has still gained a 5.7 percent increase in GDP on the first quarter of 2014.
The Philippine people were tested in times of difficulty and they have earned the respect of the whole world by demonstrating greatest courage and confidence. Tourism is one of the best assets for them on their way to recovery and sustainable growth. UNWTO is very pleased to be working alongside the Philippines, the US Government and PATA to make tourism a tool for recovery and sustainable livelihoods here in Bohol
